Witness Stops Hit and Run Driver

A driver in connection to a fatal hit and run crash in Dallas on Sunday night has been apprehended as he was trying to flee the scene of the crash.

According to Dallas Police, Juan Carlos Velasquez, 47, was standing outside of his 2010 GMC SYV that was parked at the 3200 block of Dawes Drive at approximately 8:00 pm. when witnesses say Velasquez began acting suspiciously.

Witnesses say that Velasquez got into the SUV, put it in reverse and began driving it at a high rate of speed.  Velasquez’ vehicle spun out of control and struck a pedestrian who was walking on the opposite side of Dawes Drive.  Authorities have identified the victim as Maricruze Gonzales-Cortez, 24.

Eyewitnesses to the incident said that Velasquez got out of his vehicle and saw Gonzalez-Cortez beneath it and then attempted to flee the scene.

A witness to the incident took off after Velasquez, caught him and held him until police arrived on the scene.

Gonzalez-Cortes was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police arrested Velasquez was and was charged in the crash. Charges include failure to stop and render aid causing death.

The accident is still currently under investigation.

No matter why someone leaves the scene of an accident, a charge of hit and run can also lead to criminal charges against the person, especially if there are fatalities involved. There is no doubt that this person acted callously, and whether it was simply a matter of the flight or fight response that anyone can have in a crisis, it is illegal to leave the scene of an accident. The law also requires anyone involved in an accident to render aid to those who are hurt if possible until help arrives.
